Enjoy the changing scenery as you leave the city behind and enter the desert landscapes surrounding Lake Qarun. Upon arrival, meet your local desert driver and begin exploring the archaeological and geological treasures of northern Fayoum.
9:00 AM – The Buried City (Dimeh El-Seba)
Visit the ancient settlement of Dimeh El-Seba, an archaeological site dating mainly to the Greco-Roman period. Located in a remote desert setting north of Lake Qarun, the settlement preserves remains of ancient buildings, streets, and defensive structures.
Learn about the history of this once-inhabited settlement, its relationship with the ancient Lake Moeris region, and its importance as a stopping point along historical desert routes. Explore the surviving ruins and enjoy the striking contrast between the ancient remains and the surrounding desert.
10:00 AM – Qasr El-Sagha Temple
Continue to Qasr El-Sagha, a distinctive ancient stone temple located in the northern Fayoum desert. The structure is notable for its massive stone blocks, unusual architectural design, and remote location overlooking the surrounding landscape.
Explore the temple's exterior and learn about the archaeological theories concerning its date, original function, and relationship with nearby prehistoric settlements. The peaceful desert surroundings make this an excellent stop for photography and historical exploration.
10:45 AM – The Ancient Paved Road
Discover the ancient quarry road associated with the northern Fayoum region and the basalt quarries of Widan El-Faras. This remarkable route is widely recognized as one of the oldest known paved roads in the world.
Learn how ancient Egyptian workers transported heavy basalt blocks from the quarries towards the Nile Valley, where the stone was used in important royal and funerary structures. Observe the surviving sections of the route and discover the engineering techniques that made the transportation of heavy materials possible thousands of years ago.
11:30 AM – The Petrified Forest
Continue into the geological landscapes of the Gebel Qatrani region to explore areas known for fossilized wood and ancient geological deposits, subject to authorized access.
Discover how trees and other organic materials can become fossilized through mineral replacement over millions of years. The area's geological formations provide valuable evidence of ancient environments and the natural history of northern Fayoum.
Enjoy time for photography and learn about the significance of fossil deposits in understanding the environmental changes that shaped the region.
12:15 PM – Widan El-Faras
Explore Widan El-Faras, a historically important basalt quarry area characterized by distinctive hills and dark volcanic rock formations.
The site is associated with ancient Egyptian quarrying activities and the extraction of basalt used in monumental construction, particularly during the Old Kingdom. Discover the remains and landscape associated with this ancient industrial activity, and learn how quarry workers extracted and transported heavy stone blocks across difficult terrain.
The dramatic landscape offers excellent opportunities for photography and an appreciation of ancient Egyptian engineering.
1:00 PM – Gebel Qatrani
Continue exploring the Gebel Qatrani area, known for its geological formations, fossil-bearing deposits, and expansive desert scenery.
The region is scientifically important because its rock layers and fossils preserve evidence of ancient ecosystems and wildlife that lived in Egypt millions of years ago. Enjoy the panoramic desert views and learn about the geological processes that formed the surrounding hills and valleys.
The exact stops within this area will depend on road conditions, conservation restrictions, and authorized access.
1:45 PM – Watermelon Valley (Wadi El-Battikh)
Head towards the area known as Wadi El-Battikh, or Watermelon Valley, where rounded stones and unusual geological formations create a distinctive desert landscape.
Explore the natural shapes, textures, and colors of the rocks while learning how weathering and erosion gradually transform desert terrain. The valley provides a unique setting for photography and a closer look at the geological diversity of northern Fayoum.
Enjoy a short walking and photography stop, following your guide's instructions to protect the natural environment.
2:30 PM – Colored Mountain (Gebel El-Alwan)
Continue to the Colored Mountain, an area associated with contrasting rock layers and colorful desert formations. Depending on the precise location, the landscape may feature shades of yellow, red, brown, and other earthy tones.
Explore the surrounding terrain and learn how differences in mineral composition and geological history contribute to variations in rock color. Take photographs of the natural scenery and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the desert.
Note: The exact location commonly referred to as Gebel El-Alwan should be confirmed with the local desert operator before finalizing the route.
3:15 PM – Lake Qarun and Flamingo Watching
Conclude the sightseeing portion of the tour at Lake Qarun, one of Egypt's most important natural lakes and a significant wetland habitat for resident and migratory birds.
Enjoy the lakeside scenery and spend time observing the birdlife, with the possibility of spotting flamingos depending on the season, water conditions, and their location on the day of your visit. Your guide can introduce you to the ecological importance of the lake and the role it plays in supporting wildlife in the Fayoum region.
Relax by the lake, take photographs, and enjoy the contrast between the water, surrounding desert, and agricultural landscapes.
4:00 PM – Return to Cairo

October to April is the most comfortable time, with warm days and cool evenings, so it is also the busiest and highest-priced season. May to September is hot, especially in Luxor and Aswan, but sights are quieter and prices are lower. We plan summer days around early starts and a long midday break. Christmas and New Year sell out early.
Each trip lists exactly what is included and what is not. In general our prices include private transport, a private Egyptologist guide, entrance fees for the listed sites, hotels or cruise as described, and the meals shown. International flights, visas, tips, drinks and optional extras are not included.
All our trips are private: just you and the people you travel with, your own guide and your own driver. You never share a vehicle or a guide with strangers. Nile cruise ships are shared with other guests, but your sightseeing on shore is private.
