Bahariya Oasis

Palm-filled oasis 370 km from Cairo and the gateway to the Western Desert

1 / 3

Bahariya is an oval depression about 94 km long in Egypt's Western Desert, roughly 370 km south-west of Cairo by an asphalt road finished in the early 1970s. Its main town is El Bawiti, surrounded by springs and gardens of dates, olives, guavas and mangos.

The oasis has been lived in since prehistoric times. Sights include the tomb of the governor Amenhotep Huy from the end of the 18th Dynasty, the ruins of a temple to Ammon built in the name of Alexander the Great, and the Greco-Roman cemetery known as the Valley of the Golden Mummies, excavated since 1999.

Bahariya is the usual first night on a Western Desert route. Heading south, the road crosses the Black Desert, a 30 km stretch of dark, basalt-capped hills, before reaching the White Desert and Farafra.
