Dakhla Oasis

Green oasis of farming villages and the medieval mud-brick town of Al-Qasr

1 / 3

Dakhla lies in the New Valley Governorate, between Farafra and Kharga oases and about 350 km west of the Nile. It stretches some 80 km east to west along a string of villages; the main town is Mut, with Al-Qasr in the north-west.

Al-Qasr is a fortified Islamic town founded in the 12th century over a Roman fort. Its narrow lanes are lined with mud-brick houses up to four storeys high, some built with carved stones from an ancient temple nearby. About 10 km away stands Deir el-Hagar, a sandstone temple to Amun, Mut and Khonsu built under the Roman emperor Nero and decorated under Vespasian, Titus and Domitian.

On a Western Desert route, Dakhla follows Farafra after about 300 km of highway. Kharga Oasis lies some 200 km further east.
