Kharga Oasis

Largest Western Desert oasis, home to the Temple of Hibis and Bagawat

1 / 3

Kharga is the largest of Egypt's western oases, a depression about 160 km long lying some 200 km west of the Nile valley. Its main town, El Kharga, is the capital of the New Valley Governorate and is largely modern. The ancient Darb el-Arba'in caravan route to Sudan passed through here, guarded by a chain of Roman mud-brick forts.

The Temple of Hibis, 2 km north of town, is the best-preserved temple in Egypt from the Saite-Persian period (664-404 BCE), decorated largely under the Persian king Darius I. Nearby, El Bagawat is one of the oldest Christian cemeteries in the world, with 263 domed mud-brick chapels from the 3rd to 7th centuries, some with painted biblical scenes.

Kharga is the last oasis on the route. From Baris at its southern end, a desert highway leads to Luxor.
