Marsa Matrouh

Turquoise Mediterranean bays and the gateway to Siwa Oasis

1 / 3

Marsa Matrouh is the main town on Egypt's western Mediterranean coast, about 290 km west of Alexandria. Its sheltered bays of white sand and clear turquoise water, such as Agiba Beach and Cleopatra's Beach, are among the most beautiful on the Egyptian coast.

It is also the gateway to Siwa Oasis. The road to Siwa leaves the coast at Marsa Matrouh and runs about 300 km south through the Western Desert, so every trip to Siwa passes through the town on the way in and on the way out. Many guests stop here for lunch by the sea or spend a night before going on.

Nearby you can see Cleopatra's Bath, a rock pool where legend says the queen swam, the Rommel Museum in a cave used by the German commander during the Second World War, and the war cemeteries of El Alamein on the coast road back to Alexandria.
