Nile Cruise Ship vs. Dahabiya: Which Is Right for Your Trip?

Compare a 5-star Nile cruise ship with a traditional two-masted dahabiya sailing boat: cabin comfort, quiet stops, departure days and cost.

Sailing between Luxor and Aswan is the heart of most first-time trips to Egypt, and you have two very different ways to do it: a classic 5-star Nile cruise ship or a traditional twin-masted sailing boat called a dahabiya.

A 5-star Nile cruise ship carries 50 to 75 cabins, a swimming pool on the top sun deck, a restaurant, lounge bar, elevator and air-conditioned public rooms. Ships run on fixed 3-night (Aswan to Luxor) or 4-night (Luxor to Aswan) schedules, stopping at Edfu and Kom Ombo along the way. Even though the ship itself is shared with other passengers, all your shore excursions with us are private — your own Egyptologist guide meets you at the gangway at every temple.

Within cruise ships, we divide vessels into three clear tiers: 5-Star Standard (well-kept classic ships, great value), Deluxe (newer ships with larger windows and upgraded dining) and Luxury (top-tier boutique vessels with suites, balconies and a-la-carte restaurants).

A dahabiya is an intimate wooden sailing vessel with just 6 to 12 cabins, a shaded sundeck with Persian rugs and daybeds, and no engine noise while under sail (a small tugboat assists when the wind drops). Because of its shallow draft, a dahabiya can moor at quiet river islands, visit the rock tombs of El Kab and the sandstone quarries of Gebel el-Silsila where big ships cannot stop, and serve dinner by candlelight on the riverbank.

Choose a 5-star cruise ship if you want a swimming pool, lower per-cabin rates, flexible departure weekdays or a shorter 3-night sail. Choose a dahabiya if you want peace and quiet, small-boat charm, home-style Egyptian cooking and uncrowded temple stops.

Questions travelers ask

Is it better to sail Luxor to Aswan (4 nights) or Aswan to Luxor (3 nights)?

Both cover the exact same sights in Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan. Four nights from Luxor to Aswan gives you a slightly more relaxed sailing afternoon on the river; three nights from Aswan to Luxor is ideal if you are short on time.

Are shore excursions on a Nile cruise private or with the ship’s big group?

With Egypt Trip Maker, your shore excursions are always private — just your group and your own Egyptologist guide.

Do dahabiyas have air conditioning and private bathrooms?

Yes. Every dahabiya we use has en-suite bathrooms with hot showers and air conditioning in the cabins.
